The Star of the Sea High and Stella Maris International Security are investigating reports that Star of the Sea High School email accounts associated with Edublog as well as their official social accounts, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram were hacked, school officials told BecauseMedia SA.
The BecauseMedia Post interviewed the alleged hacker, who said he accessed a PayPal account associated with Star of the Sea that included information regarding its security clearance application, and the hacker is also suspected to have accessed a Facebook account associated with Star.
The SMIS issued a statement on Friday morning saying they are aware of the report. A Star of the Sea spokesman also issued a statement saying, “We don’t discuss the Secretary’s security information. We have forwarded this matter to the appropriate authorities.” The Police declined to comment.
It does not appear that any classified information was accessed, according to a law enforcement official.
The reports highlight the sensitivity of admin using school email addresses whether or not they use them for school purposes, an issue thrust into the spotlight in part by Star of the Sea’s admin use of private email when she was admin of the school's accounts.
While much of the controversy over Star’s email use stems from the fact that it used the account for work purposes — there has also been concern about officials using personal email for non-work purposes but on company computers.
The problem is that private email addresses make easy targets.
The concern with personal email is that it can be relatively easy for hackers to target and exists outside the protections on .gov, .edu & @clerk.com email addresses managed by the schools.
In fact, the hacker told Because Media that he used a stunningly simple tactic to allegedly hack Government’s account.
Star of the Sea shared on their Facebook Page that they now created a new Gmail account for a temporary use while its mail team resolve the issue. They can now bw reached at [email protected] or [email protected].
